The lower house of Spain’s parliament overwhelmingly approved on the 2 September 2011 a rushed amendment to the constitution to restrict future budget deficits and public debt.

The constitutional change, which was subsequently approved in the Senate, the upper house of the Spanish Parliament, on the 7 September 2011, would commit Spain to adhere to EU limits for debt and deficits from 2020.
