Article reported that Spain said it would demand '100 per cent' compensation for the damage suffered by its farmers over unfounded accusations that they were the source of the deadly E. coli outbreak in Germany in which 22 people have died and hundreds have fallen sick.

The announcement made by Spain on the 6 June 2011 came as Germany caused more confusion and uncertainty in its battle against the outbreak when authorities rowed back on suggestions made on the 5 June 2011 that bean sprouts had started the crisis.

EU Agriculture Ministers held an emergency meeting in Luxembourg on the 7 June 2011 to discuss possible compensation measures for fruit and vegetable producers hit by the crisis. Ministers evaluated the food safety and market implications of the outbreak of E. coli in the
EU.

The European Commission proposed on the 7 June 2011 giving at least €150m in compensation to farmers hit by the E. coli outbreak.
