The hundreds of thousands of eastern European migrants who entered the UK after immigration controls were relaxed, following the expansion of the European Union in 2004, had an 'insignificant' impact on growth, reported an economics think-tank in April 2011. Overall output was only 0.95% higher because of an influx of roughly 700,000 migrants from eight countries in eastern Europe who joined the EU in 2004 and the two who joined in 2007, the National Institute of Economic and Social Research found. |
