José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Spain’s Socialist prime minister since 2004, announced on 2 April 2011 he will not be his party’s candidate for the general election due in 2012, making way for a replacement who is likely to lose to the rightwing Popular party opposition.

Spanish Socialists, their popularity undermined by the economic crisis and the resulting austerity belatedly imposed by Mr Zapatero, will choose their future leader after May’s 2011 local and regional elections.

The favourites to take over from Mr Zapatero, who will remain as prime minister until a general election due in early 2012, are his deputy Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, interior minister, and Carme Chacón, defence minister.
