Boost for Portugal as education standards rise

A strong improvement in educational standards has boosted Portugal’s efforts to persuade European Union partners and financial markets that it is taking effective measures to tackle the causes of the country’s low economic growth.

Results published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in December 2010 show that Portuguese 15-year-olds made the biggest overall improvement in reading, maths and scientific skills from 2006 to 2009 compared with students from other developed countries.
