The e-Borders programme is a system instituted by the UK Government to gather information electronically on all travellers entering or leaving the United Kingdom. It is regarded by the Government as an essential tool for immigration control, counter-terrorism and security purposes. This note provides an update on the current status of the programme and summarises some of the difficulties and controversies which have arisen so far. Section 4.3 considers whether e-Borders is compatible with EU law. |
