The EU should make more active use of its Lisbon Treaty powers to promote the social and educational benefits of mass sports, said many speakers at a European Parliament public hearing on the 18 November 2010. Others raised farther-reaching ideas, such as holding a European Olympics or setting up a young athletes exchange programme. However, EurActiv reported that European Commission officials expressed doubt as to whether they would have enough funding to launch the European Union’s new sports policy after talks on the EU budget for 2011 collapsed earlier in the week. Separately, EU Sport Ministers, meeting in the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council on 18 November 2010, adopted a Resolution and two sets of Conclusions in the field of sport. These are the first documents to be adopted by the Council following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty in late 2009, which gives the EU a supporting, coordinating and supplementing competence in the field of sport. The EU will set up a High-level structured dialogue with sports stakeholders. |
