Ireland’s two main opposition parties, which are likely to form the next government early in 2011, signalled on the 25 November 2010 that they would seek to renegotiate the ruling coalition’s four-year fiscal adjustment plan announced the previous day.

The head of Ireland’s main trade union alliance also threw doubt on the austerity plan, saying 'the government has no mandate to sign off on a plan as controversial as this'.
