Sarkozy stands firm against pension protests

Workers turned out in a further day of protests and strikes against President Nicolas Sarkozy's unpopular pension reform on the 19 October 2010 as the government tapped on emergency reserves to offset a growing fuel shortage.

Nevertheless, the French government insisted it would not give in to strikers as the protests over pension reform descended into violence on the previous day with clashes between students and police in several towns across France.
