EU faces threat to migration principle

The battle between France and the European Union over Paris’s treatment of Roma migrants is not only the most high-profile break between Brussels and a large member state in recent years.

It also goes to the heart of the growing threat to one of the foundation stones of the EU – the right of the bloc’s 500m citizens to live, work and study in any of the bloc’s 27 countries.
