German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling centre-right coalition in Germany faced plummeting popularity in opinion polls on the eve of the vote on 30 June 2010 to elect a new federal president.

Political scientists believed that if Christian Wulff, Ms Merkel’s candidate for the presidency, were to lose the vote Joachim Gauck, the non-party candidate supported by the SPD and Greens, it could force the resignation of both the chancellor and her government.
