Marek Belka, a former Polish Prime Minister, 2004-05 and in 2010 director of the IMF’s European department, accepted an offer in May 2010 to become Poland’s central bank governor, pending approval by parliament. The move followed the death of Slawomir Skrzypek, the then central bank chief, who was killed on in April 2010 along with President Lech Kaczynski and other senior officials in an air crash near the Russian city of Smolensk. |
