The remarkable sense of national unity triggered by the air disaster of 10 April 2010 at which a substantial proportion of the Polish elite were killed, was broken on the 14 April 2010 by a controversy over where President Lech Kaczynski and his wife should be buried. At the request of the president's family, and with the blessing of the Roman Catholic Church, the Kaczynskis were to be buried on the 18 April 2010 in royal tombs below the Wawel cathedral in Krakow, the resting place of Polish kings and patriots. The decision forced an immediate assessment of Kaczynski's presidency, and whether it was remarkable enough to allow him to lie in such august company. Hundreds took to the streets of Krakov in protest at the plan for a second consecutive night. Thousands joined an internet campaign against it. |
