In this Commentary Amanda Paul looks at the challenges facing Ukraine’s future President Viktor Yanukovych: creating political and economic stability, improving governance and strengthening the rule of law. In the immediate future he needs to demonstrate that he is not a Russian stooge, so the EU should use this opportunity to strengthen relations with Ukraine, pushing for reforms, but offering assistance. Another priority for Kiev is energy, and contrary to his election-speak energy policy is likely to continue unaltered, leaving intact agreements reached with the EU and Russia in 2009. |
