Report of a FT interview with the United Kingdom shadow (opposition) Foreign Minister William Hague, March 2010. In the context of the forthcoming UK General Election to be held at some point in 2010 he said the Conservatives had made 'a strategic decision' not to pick a fight with Europe if they won the election, insisting that a Tory government would be 'highly active and activist in European affairs from day one'.

However, Mr Hague did say he would oppose the creation of a European Monetary Fund and would pull the UK out of the European Defence Agency.
