Merkel fails to quell divisions in coalition

Sharp differences re-emerged in Germany’s centre-right government in February 2010, despite efforts by Chancellor Angela Merkel to impose order on her fractious coalition partners only four months after they came to office.

Divisions over policy including tax cuts, health reform, welfare payments and nuclear energy have plagued the three-party alliance since it took office in October 2009.
