Article reports that Spanish labour unions and employers, faced with the gravest economic crisis in half a century and a sharp rise in unemployment to more than 4m, have agreed February 2010 to limit wage rises over the next three years to between 1 and 2.5% a year.

The framework agreement, although not binding, is the prelude to negotiations on reforms to Spain’s rigid labour market and suggests that both sides have accepted the need for the Spanish economy to become more competitive.
