The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), in January 2010, gave its first opinion on the compassionate use of a medicine. Compassionate use is a way of making available to patients with an unmet medical need a promising medicine which has not yet been authorised (licensed) for their condition.
