Greek customs and tax officials launched a 48-hour strike on the 4 February 2010 that shut down ports and border crossing points amid signs of a growing union backlash against the government’s austerity programme.

The country’s largest union, the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), which represents private sector employees, announced a one-day strike for the 24 February 2010 in solidarity with public sector workers.

The Greek government has urged the nation to accept the austerity measures, warning that the country could not afford strikes or recent road blockades by farmers demanding subsidies.
