This study was commissioned by the European Parliament and aims at providing an overview and analysis of the conditions for legal immigration in the 27 Member States. The analysis was undertaken with a view to examining the benefits and possibilities of common policies at the EU level for different immigration categories. The study focuses on the following categories of legal immigration: family immigration, economic immigration (employment, self-employment and seasonal employment) and immigration for the purpose of studies and training.
