Summary: The European Commission launched on 26 November 2009 a public consultation on the revision of Directive 90/314/EEC (also known as the Package Travel Directive). The exercise focused on possible ways of solving the main limitations of the existing rules and aimed to quantify the impact of various possible legislative options. The review of the Directive was subject to discussion at a plenary session of the European Parliament, which also adopted a Resolution on passenger compensation in the event of airline bankruptcy. Further information: The Commission consulted on extending the basic cover provided by the European Union's 1990 Package Travel Directive – on information, liability for sub-standard services and protection for insolvency - to the next generation of 'dynamic packages' where consumers make up their own packages, often online, through one website or different partner websites. The paper also considers extending basic insolvency protection for consumers beyond package and dynamic packages across the board, including for stand alone airline tickets. The public consultation was closed in February 2010. |
