Ukraine is unlikely to receive more money from the International Monetary Fund in the autumn of 2009, Oleksandr Shlapak, deputy head of Victor Yushchenko’s presidential administration, said on the 8 September 2009. The comments painted a grim picture in coming months for a nation struggling to pull out of a deep recession amid political deadlock.

His remarks sparked criticism from some investors who saw them as an attempt to undermine opponents and Ukraine’s economy for personal political gains.
