Nato promised a full investigation on the 4 September 2009 into an air strike on two fuel tankers that killed up to 90 people in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province. The alliance said many Taliban insurgents who had hijacked the tankers were killed but it admitted it had reports of many civilian casualties. The FT reported that Germany’s armed forces in Afghanistan said they had called the Nato airstrike. Civilian casualties from Nato strikes over the months have caused outrage among Afghans. The new commander of Nato and US forces in the country, General Stanley McChrystal, has made curbing such casualties a main focus of his strategy. News that German commanders were involved may also come as a severe blow to Berlin’s efforts to convince a sceptical German public that the mission in Afghanistan is worth completing. |
