Article reports that the European Commission on 9 September 2009 threw its support behind a complete ban on bluefin tuna fishing, recommending that the fish most prized by sushi lovers be listed as an endangered species.

However, EurActiv reports that national experts from the Member States failed to support the proposals on the 21 September 2009, as a result of opposition from Spain, Malta, Italy, France, Greece and Cyprus. EU Environment Ministers will have the final say by the end of 2009.
