Jerzy Buzek, MEP, and a former Polish prime minister, claimed the Presidency of the European Parliament on the 14 July 2009 in a symbolic triumph for the formerly communist countries from central and eastern Europe that joined the European Union in 2004. He is likely to hold the Presidency for 2.5 years of the 7th European Parliament, 2009 - 2014.
