Commentary feature by Christian Engström, the Pirate Party’s member of the European Parliament. Piratpartiet won 7.1% of the popular vote in Sweden in the June 2009 EP elections and gave the party a single seat in the European Parliament for the first time.

The manifesto of the Party is to reform copyright laws and gradually abolish the patent system. It opposes mass surveillance and censorship on the net, as in the rest of society. It want to make the EU more democratic and transparent.
