US President Donald Trump replaced his National Security Adviser Herbert Raymond McMaster on the 22 March 2018 after just over a year on the job, replacing him with former US Ambassador at the United Nations, John Bolton.

Most commentators classified John Bolton as a war-hawk with strong and controversial views on issues relating to North Korea, the Iran nuclear deal, the Middle East, and relations with China and Russia.
