In July 2008, the European Commission proposed to update the 1994 legislation (94/45/EC) on European Works Councils (EWCs) to improve their role in anticipating corporate restructuring and involving employees in decision-making. The Council of the EU and the European Parliament have now completed the legislative process, meaning the new directive has been adopted. The new legislation will strengthen EWCs to better inform and consult workers during restructuring. This is of particular relevance in the current economic climate, so that workers and employers anticipate and manage as well as possible difficult restructuring decisions and future developments. |
