“Moving towards Turkish membership in the EU would be an important signal of your commitment to this agenda and ensure that we continue to anchor Turkey firmly in Europe,” Mr Obama told fellow heads of state at an EU-US summit in Prague, 5 April 2009. However, two of the EU’s biggest member states – France and Germany - quickly rejected the suggestion.
