Abstract: This book explores the implications for the agricultural and food sectors for Central and Eastern European countries in the light of transition and European Union integration, with primary focus on the environmental and socio-economic dimensions of agricultural development.

The implementation of the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy in new member countries is naturally central to this and the book not only investigates matters from a historical standpoint but also likely future developments.

Analysis is carried out at the economy-wide level and the potential for more sustainable agricultural development pathways is explored. Agriculture continues to exert a substantial influence on the economies of most countries in the region and is fundamentally linked to rural landscapes and people’s livelihoods.
