Greece’s cabinet approved a further four-year austerity deal on the 9 June 2011 after days of high-octane debate by parliamentary deputies and officials from the governing socialist party. George Papandreou, Prime Minister, appeared to have regained control of his Panhellenic Socialist Movement after an eight-hour session of its political council, despite outspoken criticism of his government’s efforts to save the country from default. The government would now have to brace itself for what promised to be a stormy debate and vote in Parliament on the programme. Separately, Greece’s statistical agency revised downward on the 9 June 2011 its quarter-on-quarter growth estimate for the first three months of 2011, curbing hopes that an export-driven recovery might be on the way for the crisis-hit country. |
