On the face of it, the Russian-Ukrainian gas deal agreed January 2009 eliminates controversial intermediary trading companies from a key corner of the European market. But the joy of European Union officials – who welcomed the agreement as a big step towards greater transparency in what is often seen as an opaque business – might prove short-lived.
