The Sub-Committee was set up to consider Ireland’s future in the European Union in light of the Lisbon referendum result. On 4 November 2008, Jimmy Kelly of the union, UNITE, made a presentation to the Committee on EU social policy in relation to Ireland and, in particular, on workers' and employment rights. In the the second half of the meeting, presentations were made by Dr Alan Ahearne, from the National University of Ireland, Galway and by representatives of the Irish Taxation Institute.
