Article reports that Presideny Sarkozy of France (and current EU Presidency head) conjured up a series of pronouncements and initiatives in late October 2008 that have angered, exasperated or simply alarmed several of his European Union counterparts. As holder of the EU’s six-month presidency, he has relished the chance to lead Europe through one crisis to the next. Now he is intent on shaking it up and rearranging the pieces to suit French interests. For example, he called for a club of eurozone government leaders, with a permanent chairman, to give economic and political direction to the bloc. This would be the 'economic government' for the EU that Paris has long sought. |
