Wojciech Jaruzelski, the communist general who declared martial law in 1981, ending Poland’s brief flirtation with freedom under the Solidarity labour union, went on trial on the 12 September 2008 with other retired officers and former party officials on charges of being part of a 'criminal conspiracy'.
