Missile talks with Poles gain urgency

Talks on building part of a US missile defence shield on Polish soil restarted on the 13 August 2008, with Polish officials sending much more positive signals than recently, in part because of fears awakened by the Russian attack on Georgia.

On the 14 August 2008 Poland and the United States signed a preliminary agreement to deploy elements of the US missile defence shield on Polish soil.

On the 20 August 2008 US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in Warsaw to formally sign the anti-missile defence deal. Russia is against the move and says it will further damage its already delicate relations with Washington.
