Spanish cabinet ministers have interrupted their summer breaks to discuss the country's rapidly deteriorating economy, August 2008. In an unprecedented break with tradition, most of the cabinet's 17 members have postponed their holidays or returned to Madrid.

Prices in Spain rose at their fastest annual rate for 15 years in July 2008, driven by rising food and fuel costs.
The annual inflation rate climbed to 5.3% in July, up from 5% in June.
