At the start of the meeting, the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, announced that the Government had decided to commission a comprehensive research project in order to clarify the reasons underlying the result of the Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty which took place in Ireland on 12 June 2008 and to provide insights into public attitudes toward the European Union. The contract to carry out this research project had been awarded to Millward Brown IMS.
