This background paper outlines some of the main issues concerning global competitiveness and the location of firms in Europe. It provides some of the fundamental ideas of economic geography, presents some relevant data and defines some key concepts. The conference itself, due to take place on 3-5 June 2008, in Poznan, Poland, will bring together representatives from companies, the social partners and policy makers and aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of what is required from all parties to ensure a competitive and socially cohesive Europe.
