Turkey's top prosecutor asked the constitutional court on the 14 March 2008 to close the governing Justice and Development party (AKP), in a dramatic and unexpected heightening of tension between the socially conservative government and the country's secularist establishment.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticised the proposal to ban his ruling AK Party as being against the 'national will'.
