The EU and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on Monday (4 December) which would make it easier to import oil and gas from the central Asian republic. The accord calls for co-operation on pipelines used to transport fuel and the development of environmentally friendly technologies.

The centre-right EPP-ED group in the European Parliament has been forced to change its rules of procedure to avoid damaging splits over who should lead the group until 2009.
