Bremen’s efficiency

Eager to ensure that citizens make efficient use of its excellent public transport networks, the German city of Bremen set up an intermodal travel information centre in 2002.

There, would-be passengers can obtain information on all transport operators, buy tickets and pick up maps showing walking connections. Estimates of travel times and information on car-sharing services and bike-and-ride lines are readily available. Local information is integrated into the nationwide public transport network, making longer intermodal trips less daunting.

Germany's tenth largest city has an excellent track record on providing efficient intermodal services. Residents living in the outer reaches of the city benefit from an extended tram network, efficient bus connections and a park-and-ride scheme. Use of public transport in the east of Bremen has increased by 40%. So-called Mobilpunkt stations for shared cars have also been rolled out in the city to relieve inner-city areas of intensive car and car-parking problems.
