EU warns against protectionism

The European Union should not adopt protectionist policies out of fear of the rise of imperfectly democratic countries such as China and Russia, the top EU trade official said on the 8 February 2008. Peter Mandelson, Trade Commissioner, vowed that the EU would defend itself against unfairly subsidised imports and would insist on reciprocal market access, but said more far-reaching protectionism would damage Europe’s economic interests.
