Barroso tells EU leaders to avoid protectionism

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, plus the European Commission President, met in London, 29 January 2008 to prepare for agreed European positions on financial and economic challenges facing the world in advance of a G7 Financial Ministers meeting, Tokyo, 9 February 2008 - with the US subprime mortgage crisis and high crude oil prices topping the agenda. European Commission President Barroso warned European leaders not to succumb to the temptations of protectionism or the irresponsible pump-priming of their economies in response to global financial market turbulence.
