The European Union moved a step closer, 10 December 2007, to giving unified support for an independent Kosovo, acknowledging that a United Nations-sponsored attempt to negotiate a settlement for the breakaway province had failed.

Kosovo would declare independence from Serbia 'much earlier' than May 2008, the Kosovo Albanian government said.
The statement came as a UN deadline for agreement on the future of the province expired, 10 December 2007.
