The euro-area climate became decidedly sunnier when, on 16 May 2007, the European Commission backed the accession of Cyprus and Malta to the euro area from 1 January 2008. The two islands have not let the surrounding sea hamper their progressive economic convergence towards the other members of the euro area and are now making practical preparations to launch the single currency in 2008. |
