Date: 16/01/1997 EFFICIENT social policy could actually enhance economic performance, according to the Dutch presidency and the European Commission. It is a message which the two will take as their theme at a conference in Amsterdam next week at which keynote speakers will include Social Affairs Commissioner Pádraig Flynn, Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok and former Commission President Jacques Delors. The three-day event will examine ways of ensuring European citizens enjoy a minimum level of social protection while at the same time preventing welfare schemes from stifling job creation. “A social policy that has gone too far could become an obstacle to welfare and employment because of its crippling effect on the jobs market. Deregulation and a stronger market mechanism could provide a solution,” says a document produced by the Dutch ministry of social affairs. But it also warns against letting the pendulum swing too far in the other direction. |
