Croatia was told by the European Union on 16 March 2005 that EU membership talks, due to begin on 17 March, were being postponed because of the country's failure to hand over to the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague a fugitive general wanted for war crimes. The issue has caused divisions within the EU and there are now concerns that the dispute could affect Turkey's membership hopes.
