As many as 600,000 drug users could be passing through prisons in the EU each year, according to a new report, 'Assistance to drug users in European Union prisons', by the Lisbon-based European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. The report shows that women and younger inmates are particularly vulnerable to drug abuse. An abridged version of the report is available on the EMCDDA website, and the full report will be published at the end of 2001.
