Abstract:

Stripped of its Empire and in newly defined and devolved relationships with Scotland and Wales, is England able to find a new identity in its relationship with Europe? Can it cling to its old identity linked with empire and victory in two world wars defining itself as Great Britain? This work looks at the opportunities presented for the reanimation of the ideas of England and Englishness. These are opportunities that will not come free but will be hugely contested by those of the ‘elite’ official England anchored in tradition, obedience and heritage.

The book will interest scholars and students in sociology, political science and European Studies who are interested in the future of the UK within the European Union.
